The sucker.

Only a fool wouldn’t want to be a sucker.

I’m not talking about the Barnum-esque sucker. I’m talking about the seer-sucker.

The seer-sucker is a guy or gal who, when the mercury goes up, runs to a proven puckered friend – seersucker fabric.

Clad in and surrounded by the summertime favorite, the seer-sucker is ready to beat the heat and look neat doing it.

How can one fabric do all that, you ask? (Thanks for playing along.)

Well, seersucker’s unique texture is also the secret to its cool factor. Originating in India centuries ago and taking its name from the Hindustani/Persian words “kheer air shakkar” meaning milk and sugar for its smooth (milk) and rough (sugar) texture, seersucker is woven using a slack-tension process that produces its characteristic puckers. These puckers hold the fabric away from the skin allowing for heat dissipation and air circulation, thereby keeping the seer-sucker calm, collected and always cool.

As a bonus, thanks to the rough and smooth texture of the fabric, seersucker does not need to be ironed. So the seer-sucker doesn’t spend time sweating or fretting over the ironing board when there is fun in the sun to be had.

Choosing to be a seer-sucker is not hard. (Who wouldn’t want to be cool?) But since it might be difficult for the novice to navigate the spectrum of seersucker colors, patterns and garments available, I have collected some amazing American-made pieces that would be perfect primers for new suckers and excellent additions to any experienced sucker’s collection.

You remember Jay.

He had “one of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassurance in it, that you may come across four or five times in life.”

In his monstrously long car, he roared in your (junior) high school consciousness. (And if, somehow, you were absent that day and have no idea what this post is about go see the movie. Or better yet, read the book.)

The complicated and deeply flawed hero with dreams as big as the skyscrapers that began to litter the landscape of the 1920′s New York City in which he lived, Jay was the kind of guy that men had a dubious admiration for and women had an exuberant misunderstanding of.

A reluctant farm boy turned master of the universe, Gatsby epitomizes the hopefulness, ambition and spirit of invention of the Roaring 20′s (in particular) and the American dream (in general).

The psychedelic furs.

After a series of less-than-inspired names (RKO, Radio, The Europeans), the Butler brothers and their bandmates eventually hit on one of the greatest band names of all times — The Psychedelic Furs.

The name conjures up visions of hallucinogens, opioids and funky fungi; kaleidoscopically swirling patterns, Surrealism and light shows; bunnies, kittens and other soft fluffy creatures; and, of course, Molly Ringwald, Andrew McCarthy and Jon Cryer.

Born of the late 1970s emerging punk scene, The Psychedelic Furs quickly gained popularity in the UK with their poetic lyrics and innovative rhythms. And by 1981, they were enjoying world-wide recognition thanks in large part to the release of their second album, Talk, Talk, Talk. Two singles from that album made it to the US Billboard charts — Dumb Waiters and Pretty In Pink.

The latter was heard by iconic director John Hughes and became the inspiration for a little film he released in 1986, also called Pretty In Pink. (Perhaps you’ve heard of it? If not, check your pulse. You may be deceased.)

Equally inspired are the spectacular American-made products below. They represent not only some of the Country’s most colorful, edgy and tasty style, but also my (slightly warped) interpretation of this amazing band name.

Django Unchained is the latest offering from schlock-master, Quentin Tarantino.

With his characteristic overtures to movie history, Django Unchained is part western and part revenge epic.

It is also equal parts dark comedy and love story.
