There is no one like Mom.

She seen you at your best, your worst and even naked and still loves you. (A tall order indeed!)

So what do you get her for Mother’s Day? Better yet, what does she want?

It’s not that complicated. Moms are people too. (Though many do possess a few superhuman powers.) They want what we all want — to be loved, to be appreciated, to know that they have made a difference.

With that in mind, I have found a some amazing American-made, Mom-worthy gifts for you to consider. (After all, there is nothing that moms hate more than off-shore chotchkies.)

Check them all out. You are sure to find at least one that is just right for your mom.

Bailey Doesn’t Bark – Made in USA

Give Mom a message.

Tell her you admire her, appreciate her, love her and are grateful to her.

Better yet write it.

Put your tribute on Bailey Doesn’t Bark’s Postmug (above, $24 – price includes pen). This way your mom can start Mother’s Day (and every day) with a steaming cup of coffee or tea and an affirmation of your affection.

Order the handcrafted 11 oz white ceramic Postmug and have it shipped to you – not Mom. Then, using the black porcelain pen included, leave your mark.

Bailey Doesn’t Bark’s postcard-themed mug provides 3 distinct zones for messaging – a bordered front (not shown) ideal for a drawing or quote, as well as lines for an addressee and personal note on the back. (Got more to say? Buy more mugs!)

Once you have completed your Mom-sterpiece, simply allow it to dry for 24 hours and then bake the mug for 35 minutes to permanently set the ink.

When finished, you will have a gift as unique as you are and your mom will have a new favorite mug!

Bedhead Pajamas - Made in Los Angeles, California

Give Mom a break.

Sometimes the nicest thing you can do for a busy person is to help them find some down time.

This Mother’s Day why not give Mom the day off.

Take her breakfast in bed. Turn off her cellphone. Encourage her to read a book and/or take a nap. In short, promise her a quiet, stress-free day in her PJs.

And to make sure she looks as good as a day of rest will make her feel, give her an amazing new pair of 100% cotton Bedhead Pajamas. (Our Town Daisy Marine Classic, $136, shown above.)

With a wide variety of prints (from plain to paisley and everything in between), styles (long-sleeve, cap sleeve, capri, cami, gown, nightshirt and robe to name a few), fabrics (stretch, sateen, poplin, flannel, voile, luxe and cashmere) and sizes (XS-3x), Bedhead has something to please any mom.

And just in case this lounge act becomes a regular part of your family’s routine, Bedhead makes pajamas for men, tweens and children. Mix or match (if you dare!).

Creekside Farms - Made in Greenfield, California

Give Mom the world.

Okay, so you may not be able to whisk her away to Provence for the weekend, but you can bring a bit of Provence to her.

Hang Creekside Farms French Herb Wreath (left, $69 for 16″ wreath; $79 for 18″ wreath) in your mom’s kitchen and you might just inspire a delicious coq au vin for dinner.

The French-inspired herbs – lavender, marjoram, sage, purple oregano, thyme, and bay -featured in this beautiful, fragrant and usable wreath are entirely US-grown.

Creekside Farms is a family business, owned and operated by two generations of the Umbarger family.

The herbs and flowers used in the production of Creekside’s wreaths, braids, bouquets, centerpieces, baskets and garlands are grown without pesticides on the family’s Monterey County farms.

The crops are harvested by hand, naturally air-dried, carefully assembled.

And best of all through May 9th, the Umbarger family is celebrating moms with a special Mother’s Day discount. Simply use the code MOM-2012 to receive 20% off your order.

She’s got a lot to carry.

In addition to wallet, keys and phone, Mom needs a bag that can hold an entire day’s contingency plan: toys to keep tots entertained; a change of clothes for those inevitable spills; and a snack in case her errands run longer than planned.

However, just because she has a lot to schlep doesn’t mean she wants to look frumpy. Enter the Carrier (above, $179). (The name really says it all doesn’t it.)

Moop, designers/manufacturers of handmade bags for men, women and children, has created the perfect Mom bag –classic, functional and durable.

The generously-sized (16″ w x 12″ h x 5″ d) tote-shaped bag is made of 100% cotton waxed canvas and lined in Cordura®, making it water resistant. (Just in case!)

It is available in 4 colors – brown, black, grey and red (shown) – and features a leather snap closure, shoulder straps, an adjustable cross-body strap, and enough interior pockets to contain almost anything.

The Carrier is an essential tool for the smart, stylish, well-prepared mom.

Peggy Li - Made in San Francisco, California

Give Mom the credit.

Let’s face it. None of us would be here with our moms.

These brave women who have kept us fed, clothed, clean and healthy are the core of our families.

Show Mom how much your family means to you with one of Peggy Li’s initial necklaces.

Available in 18 varieties, you are sure to find one that matches your mom’s style. Choose from round or square; gold or silver; Block, Typewriter, Script, Bauhaus or Old English; upper or lowercase; and plain, tooled, floral or rimmed.

Like all of Peggy Li’s initial necklaces, the Lowercase Bauhaus Initial Necklace (above, $50 as shown) comes with a 16″ or 18″ chain (longer chains available for an additional charge). Each basic necklace comes with one charm – in either 3/8″ or 1/2″ size.

Add additional charms for $5 (3/8″ size) or $8 (1/2″ size).

Why not start with a 1/2″ disk for featuring the first letter of your family name? (For instance, if we were ordering one for our tv mom, Claire Dunphy, we’d select “D”.) And then add a 3/8″ charm for each child and one for mom and dad. (The Dunphys would order an “H” for Haley, an “A” for Alex, an “L” for Luke, a “C” for Claire and a “P” for Phil).

When strung together, Peggy Li’s initial charms are a fashionable way for any mom (real or sitcom) to keep her family close to her heart.

It always fun to see what our talented friends are up to.

- Made in San Francisco, California

If you have not already picked up on it, I have a major obsession with good design and a minor obsession with tea towels. (Still shopping for a therapist who specializes in those 2!)

So it is only natural that I would be crazy for the work of linen maven Christina Weber, owner/founder/designer of the amazing Studiopatro collection.

Since we last checked in with Christina (fifty posts: the dot, the host(ess)), she has revamped her website/online store and has added some amazing designs to her already delightful array of offerings.

Oh! And she also has made the greatest video that shows you 12 ways to use a tea towel. (You know they are not just for tea anymore!)

Now, down to business.

Some of Christina’s new tea towels have an international flair.

Building on her trademark bold, sophisticated graphics, Christina has introduced a little French and a lot of humor.

The French Dot Towel (above left, $24) features 15 slate-colored dots on an 18″ x 26″ oyster-colored linen towel. In the bottom 3 dots, Christina has written “Les points font tourney le monde.” (Clever, right?)

(If your French is a little rusty or non-existent like mine, that translates “dots make the world go round.” (Clever, right?))

Christina also has applied her wit and wisdom to the French Stripe Towel (above right, $24). Toward the bottom of the exceedingly pleasing row of slate and oyster stripes, the tea towel bears the following phrase: “Tout est mieux aver des reyures.” (It’s funny ’cause it is true.)

(For the French-impaired that translates: “Everything is better with stripes.”)

Please, however, do not misinterpret Christina’s whimsy and charm. She is very serious about the construction of her goods, from fabric choice to finishing, reserving the more frivolous aspects of her personality for decoration and embellishment.

The towels above, like all of her tea towel designs, begin with 100% linen, an inherently-sustainable fabric that gets softer with each use. Likewise, each piece is hand-printed. Christina’s attention to detail ensures that every Studiopatro piece is as useable as it is unique.

And talk about unique. What is more unique than love?

To prepare for the impending onslaught of wedding invitations that inevitably begin to pour in as soon as the temperature rises, Christina has also introduced a new love collection. (A love collection fit for a love connection!)

The Love Stripe, First Ten and Forever Dot (shown above left to right, each $24) celebrate all that love is in a spring-inspired color palette:

The Love Stripe features 4 mineral-colored stripes and two familiar, melodic and true sayings: “Love is all you need” and “All you need is love.” (All together now!)

The First Ten features a mineral-colored leaf filled with the traditional anniversary gifts for years 1-5 and a willow-colored leaf filled with those for 6-10. Use it as inspiration or a cheat-sheet.

The Forever Dot highlights the words “today” and “forever” in two of its 15 willow-colored dots. A gentle reminder of love’s presence (or should I say “present”s) and its potential.

Whether you are looking for a gift for someone who is newly engaged, just married, celebrating an anniversary, loves the Beatles or whose passion is the kitchen, Christina has you covered.

The only thing that could be better than receiving one of these towels would be receiving all 3. That is why Christina has created the Love Set, which include one of each her love-themed tea towels for $66.

(We promise not to judge you if you buy the Love Set and find you love it too much to give away!)

But tea towels are not the only thing that Studiopatro makes, nor are they the only items that have been recently updated.

Christina has added Apron Sets to her bag of tricks.

Shown above, these sets combine one of Studiopatro’s gorgeous, kitchen-worthy aprons, a color-coordinated tea towel and a hand-crafted wooden spatula into the perfect gift for someone who loves to cook or whose cooking you love. (Hint: Mother’s Day is May 13th!)

The only real question is which apron shape and color you will choose.

The Apron Sets (above, $88 — a $112 value) come in a choice of two apron styles – Kitchen or Cafe - and two apron colors – oyster or oatmeal.

The Kitchen Apron (seen above in the 2 left-most images and shown in oyster) is a traditional apron shape and offers more coverage, falling to the knee (approximately). It is one-size-fits-all thanks to an adjustable neck and waist.

The Cafe Apron (seen above in the 2 right-most images and shown in oatmeal) is the ideal apron for men or women who desire less coverage. It ties at the natural waist and falls 33″.

Both aprons are made of a durable, high quality linen/cotton blend. Both feature a functionally sized pocket and are easy to slip on, size and take off thanks to pairs of strategically placed grommets and twill tape.

(Both the Kitchen Apron and the Cafe Apron are also sold individually for $68/each.)

But before you get down to cooking, you’ve got to secure the ingredients.

If, like me, you are looking for a new bag to celebrate your return to the Farmer’s Market, you have to see Studiopatro’s Market Totes (left, $74).

The generously sized (18″ x 20″) bags are 100% linen and are designed to be thrown over your shoulder as you run out the door to “gather” groceries for dinner or “carry” your change of clothes/shoes for an apres work fete.

Each side of these remarkable bags features one boldly printed word (Gather/Convey (left) or Carry/Goods (right)) and two interior pockets (one marked “Phone Home” and the other marked “Keys Please”).

And lest you think the oyster-colored linen makes these totes too fussy to do any real hauling duty, Studiopatro’s Market Totes are machine washable. (Just don’t stick them in the dryer!)

______

So what are you waiting for? Head to www.studiopatro.com to pick up something for someone you love, someone in love, or, best of all yourself.

Golf.

A religion for some (or should I say “foursome”). A four-letter word for others.

But regardless of how you feel about the game, you must acknowledge the Masters is something special.

With its Amen Corner and Hogan Bridge, Eisenhower Pine and Magnolia Lane, the tournament and club offer enough history and botany to charm the plus-fours off even the most golf-adverse.

So, just in case the pink azaleas, green grass and hours and hours of beautiful swings inspire you to take up or amp up your game, check out the 6 American manufactures below. Each is ready to help you get your (golf) game on.

Allen Edmonds – Made in Port Washington, Wisconsin

Its gotta be the shoes.

You may think that finely crafted golf shoes are the exclusive domain of professional (or at least scratch) golfers.

(You’d be wrong.)

Sure, the best players want and need the best shoes. The spend hours and hours on their feet in front of millions and millions of people so they need golf shoes that look great and can go the distance.

(That is probably why Jack Nichlaus and Ben Crenshaw recently partnered with Allen Edmonds.)

But footwear is just as important for complete duffers. (In fact maybe, more so.) Elegant, refined, classic footwear is the perfect distraction from their shanks, pop-ups and worm burners.

In other words, there is not a golfer on the planet does not deserve a pair of Allen Edmonds golf shoes.

The Company, which has been handcrafting shoes in accordance with its 212-step manufacturing process since 1922, currently offers 12 styles of golf shoes. (The Double Eagle ($295) is pictured above. Available in black or brown.)

Like all of their shoes, Allen Edmonds’s golf shoes begin with Horween Leather from nearby Chicago. The leather is cut, sewn, fit, molded and then attached to an incredibly durable 360° Goodyear welt. From there a layer of shock-absorbent natural cork is added between the insole and outsole. Finally, the shoes are finished and polished to within a 0.1″ of perfection.

(Anything less doesn’t bear the Allen Edmonds’s logo.)

Visit www.allenedmonds.com.

Ame & Lulu – Made in USA

Heads up, Boys!

Golf may be a conservative game governed by timeless rules and gentlemanly customs but one thing it is not, and has never been, is dull. At least not where color or pattern are concerned.

The golf course is home to array of vibrant polos, plaid pants and argyle sweaters. (Not all at once – please!)

But it took the innovation and design-chops of Amye Kurson to bring modern patterns and color combinations to the game.

In 2003, Amye created her first set of on-trend club head covers. Still offered today, Ame & Lulu’s golf headcovers (above, $86) are sold in a set of 3 and are marked 1, 3 and X.

Building on the popularity of her club covers, Amye has created an active lifestyle brand that includes essentials and embellishments for golf, tennis, yoga, travel, beauty, technology, pets and even babies.

Each year Ame & Lulu reinvents itself with new fabric designs. This year’s options include citrus (above), arcadia, malibu, koi, papaya and pagoda.

(So good!)

One of the things you have to love about golf, is that it has its own language. (You may as well love it. They are not going to change it!)

No one has done a better job of capturing the delightful absurdity of that language than Paul Harvey.

And no one has captured Harvey’s quote in a more attractive manner than Ben Busko.

Ben’s Golf is A Game glass tray (above, $54) is one of the most sophisticated, understated and yet playful pieces of golf decor available.

An ideal catch-all for a golfer’s desk or bedside table, this 4″x6″ decoupage tray is finished with a felt back and is signed by Ben himself.

Ben began decoupaging at 6. By 11, he had created a catalogue of goods and was receiving orders from Smith & Hawken and New York’s Botanical Garden. Today (at the ripe old age of 28), Ben has a client list that would make any decorative accessories company swoon.

He offers an ever-expanding line of decoupage accessories (coasters, paperweights, trays, magnets and picture frames) inspired by vintage papers, quotes & quips, botanical prints and antique curiosities.

And when you wear Knot Clothing’s 4 Majors D-Ring Belt (left, $44), everyone will know that you are a winner.

In fact, they maybe tempted to infer from the trophies on your belt that you have won the Masters, the US Open, the British Open and the PGA Championship. (So be it! It’s not like you told them you won all those championships to get a free round or anything. Did you?)

But even if no one mistakes you for Bobby Jones, when you wear this belt people will learn 2 very important (and true) facts about you: 1) you love golf and 2) you have amazing taste in belts.

Knot Clothing & Belt Co. produces each of its unisex belts (available in sizes S-XXL) in New England using the best cut of grosgrain ribbon available.

The Company’s focus on the details – like quality and wearability – sets it apart from other ribbon-belt manufacturers.

Each belt offers a double thickness of ribbon that ensures it will not slip out of its D-ring closure, no matter how dramatic your swing.

And if you are not a golfer, don’t worry. Knot Clothing & Belt Co. has belts, key fobs, even dog collars and leashes in patterns that offer something for everyone.

You may not understand the psychology behind it, but you have probably noticed that color affects your mood.

If you haven’t, simply step out into nature and feel its impact. (After all, there is no better color palate than the one right outside your door.)

Stressed? Let the intense blue skies and ocean offer you a sense of calm and well-being. Sluggish? The lush green of the grass and trees can provide you with a feeling of renewal and hope. (You get the idea.)

In other words, color can elevate your mood.

(Of course, color can also suppress your mood. If you’re too relaxed, too motivated and/or too happy, let me know. Once I finish rolling my eyes and suppressing my urge to strangle you, I will tell you which colors can help.)

Knowing the power of color, the guru’s at Pantone have chosen Tangerine Tango as the Color of the Year for 2012.

Why? Well, as you may have noticed that the world is a crazy place these days. We are facing a number of challenging local, national and global issues — unemployment, foreclosure, bankruptcy, debt, war, politics and healthcare (just to name a few). In other words, this is not the most carefree, prosperous time in modern history. (I apologize if that comes as news to anyone.)

We need a color that can counteract the feelings of despair and pessimism that can (and occasionally do) emerge in this era of uncertainty.

Tangerine Tango does just that. It is a bright, energetic red-orange that is imbued with optimism.

Created by perfectly blending vivacious red and friendly yellow, Tangerine Tango is the perfect antidote to our all-too-real lives.

Check out the great American manufacturers below to find amazing ways to get your dose of this dazzling hue.

glassybaby – Made in Seattle, Washington

Light it up!

Lee Rhodes, the founder of glassybaby, has found a way to do just that.

Faced with a rare form of lung cancer, Lee began to search for a distraction from her disease. She found glass-blowing.

The elegantly shaped votive holders that soon became her trademark literally glow with “color, light and love.”

Today, Lee’s votives are available in over 120 colors ranging from translucent to opaque and bold to subtle. And all as lovely as tangerine (above, $44).

But don’t Lee doesn’t limit her talent or vision to tea light holders. She also makes gorgeous glasses (called drinkers) and she uses part of the profits from the sale of glassybaby products to charities that promote health, healing and quality of life.

Buy one and help spread the spark.

Don’t say you cannot wear orange.

Whether you are a winter, spring, summer or autumn, you can rock Marketa’s Tangerine Portfolio Clutch (left, $135).

(If you are not old enough to remember a time when people had their colors “done” to determine which seasonal palette they should be wearing, just know it was peculiar.)

With generous dimensions (15″w x 11.5″h), the Portfolio Clutch lets you take all of your day-to-evening necessities. (No more playing favorites with the lip glosses.)

It is even large enough to hold up to 13″ laptops, magazines, notebooks or anything else you need to stylishly transport.

The woman responsible for this chic handbag is Prague-born, FIT educated Marketa Psenickova.

She has brought her exceptional eye for accessories to bear on an eponymous line of totes, clutches and pouches. Her Manhattan-made bags come in a variety of fun and functional sizes and a sumptuous array of leathers and suedes.

RGB created the perfect color to ensure your manicure looks as optimistic as you do.

The gorgeous red-orange color of their Coral lacquer (left, $14) is as high-shine and chip-resistant as all of RGB’s colors.

And, of course, like all the rest of RGB’s formulations, Coral is free of harmful chemicals — no formaldehyde, toluene, dibutyl phthalate, formaldehyde resin, or camphor. (In the spirit of full disclosure, I do not know what most of those things are but they sound icky which makes me glad RGB has found a way to do without them.)

RGB originally launched their cruetly-free nail color and care collection with 10 signature colors. Today it boasts over 40 colors that include the original 10, seasonal offerings and collaborations with celebrity stylists.

Russel Wright by Bauer Pottery - Made in Los Angeles, California

Good informal living substitutes a little headwork for a lot of legwork. – Russel Wright

Two American icons have joined forces to help you set a stylish, thoughtful table.

Who are they? Glad you ask. The first is celebrated American industrial designer Russel Wright.

Wright is credited with revolutionizing the American home through his inexpensive, mass-produced dinnerware, furniture, appliances and textiles. Drawing inspiration from origins as unrelated as Colonial American and Surrealism, he designed goods that made life easier, but no less gracious.

The second is Bauer Pottery of Los Angeles, a company whose original stoneware creations graced gardens and tables for over 80 years (1880s-1960s). Today the company reproduces its much-acclaimed designs from the 1930s and 1940s.

Given both entities interest in well-designed and well-made pottery of the modern era, it is not surprising that they have joined forces. As part of their fabulously vintage modern product line, Bauer Pottery offers the Russel Wright American Modern Line.

The American Modern line consists of 19 pieces – dinnerware and serving pieces like the American Modern Pitcher (above, $75). Each is available in a range of colors designed to pair perfectly with any vintage Wright-ware you are lucky enough to own and/or set a dazzlingly table all on their own.

(You might not want to be so demanding with Harold and his compatriots. Your neediness could be the reason you are having to buy your friends in the first place. Just something to think about.)

Harold, like all the Swigg Critters, is made of cruelty-free, easy to clean vinyl and filled with poly-fill and poly-pellets making him as perfectly suited to whimsically hold down a stack of papers on your desk as he would be for your young-friend to tote around and talk to.
Remember the 80s?

Not old enough? Rent a John Hughes movie.

Don’t get me wrong. I don’t mean to sound unsympathetic. A lot has changed in the last 30+ years.

It would be almost impossible for you to relate to a time so far removed. A time when Madonna was popular. People spent hours playing video games. There was an economic recession. Seinfeld was on tv. And neon was cool.

(Or would it?)

Well, regardless of whether you are a neon-neophyte or a veteran of the 80s fluorescent fad, take note: Neon is back.

And no one is doing more to help us integrate these electric hues into our wardrobes, our lives and (in one case) our stomachs than the 8 US companies below. Their American-made products are great ways to brighten up your life.

Check them all out!

Clare Vivier – Made in Los Angeles, California

What do you get when you cross French glamour with LA minimalism?

Bag maven Clare Vivier.

What grew out of a quest for a functional laptop case that was as stylish as Clare herself has grown into a line of covetable bags.

Each item in Clare’s collection of totes, cases, clutches, sacs and accessories effortlessly walks the line between classic sophistication and modern edge.

That is why it comes as no surprise that her La Pochette (left, $145) sports an on-trend neon green stripe.

The 4.5″h x 6.5″w undyed leather pouch is simple and chic, bold and brave. It would be a darling way for a trend-savvy 20-something to transport her credit card, photo id, and iPhone on a night out. But it would be equally as appropriate for holding the photos of an elegant retiree’s grandchildren.

(Genius, right?)

La Pochette is available in 2 other neon colors – pink stripe and blue stripe. (It is also available in 4 solid, dyed leather colors – black, red, royal blue and orange.) Clare also offers her amazing Foldover Clutch in neon colors.

Fruitsuper Design - Made in Seattle, Washington

Looking to one-up your friends?

Fruitsuper Design can help.

The Company’s SBiR (So Big its Ridiculous) rings (left) are sure to be the biggest (not to mention the brightest) stones your little group has ever seen.

(Unless, of course, you happen to be friends with Beyoncé.)

Chiseled out of 100% silicone, Fruitsuper’s rings are comfortable, flexible, lightweight, durable and always the perfect punch of color.

But take note — the rings’ brilliant hues and grand proportions essentially guarantee that you will be the center of attention wherever you wear them.

So, if you are tired of people constantly complimenting you on your flawless fashion-sense and relentlessly clamoring to bask in your radiance, then these might not be the rocks for you.

SBiR rings come in 2 designs, 4 colors (yellow, pink, blue and gray), and 2 sizes. Contact info@fruitsuperdesign.com to order.

Holey Donuts – Made in New York, New York

If you can’t beat ‘em, eat ‘em.

Guys, you may think that fluorescent pink has no place in your life. And that might have been true if Frank Dilullo had never created the Pink Velvet Holey Donut (left, $15.95/6-pack). But he did. (Thank goodness!)

The Pink Velvet Holey Donut is a strawberry-iced, pink-sprinkled mouthful of deliciousness.

What sets this donut apart is it is low-fat. (No, that is not a typo.) In fact, each Pink Velvet has only 147 calories and 3 grams of fat.

(I know. I know. It seems impossible. But it is true.)

Holey Donuts has found a way to make light, fluffy, gourmet donuts that will not derail your diet. The secret? Unlike traditional donuts, they are not deep-fried.

Frank did not set out to create a healthier donut. He set out to make the best donut anyone had ever tasted. Through experimentation and luck, he ended up with both.

Only real ingredients are used in the creation of Holey Donut’s “love at first bite” pastries – no artificial sweeteners, no trans-fats.

The donuts are currently only available online and ship flash-frozen. This means you can enjoy a hand-made donut anytime you want, right in your own home. Check out all the varieties – fat and calorie information are available on each.

Julep - Made in USA

Don’t think you are ready to take the neon plunge?

Start small. How about just dipping your toe into some fabulous fluorescents?

Better yet, how about 10 toes. And, if your feeling really wild, maybe even 10 fingers. (Okay. Okay. I won’t push you.)

When you’re ready, Julep’s Samantha (left, $14) is the obvious choice.

The ultra-hot pink semi-matte creme nail polish will banish all of your reservations about colors of this intensity and will leave you with a glow of energy and optimism that only neon can deliver.

(Warning: Samantha is even more pink and even more fun in real life than it appears on your monitor.)

Just when you think it could not possibly get any better, you learn that Samantha, like all 80 of Julep’s shades, is a 4-free formula. This means that Julep produces its polishes without the use of carcinogens like formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin, toluene and DBP.

And because the ladies behind the Julep brand are all about making women feel confident, beautiful and connected, $1 from each bottle of nail polish is donated to organizations that empower women.

Who would have though one little bottle could help you look good, feel good and do good?

Put your hands up . . . if you think this is most wonderful, most exuberant firearm you have ever seen. (Mine are up!)

Artist Sarah Applebaum’s Hot Lux (left, $450) will not keep people off your property or out of your house. (In fact, when people find you own one of Sarah’s creations, they will likely be beating down your door to get a look at it.) The Hot Lux, however, it will keep the blues at bay.

How can you possibly be anything but happy when you look at this 2′ x 1.5′ revolver with removable cylinder made entirely of layered felt? (Buy it. It’s a lot cheaper and a lot safer than “happy” pills!)

An internationally recognized artist, Sarah work has influenced the way people think about soft sculpture and the use of textiles in art.

Sarah’s gun series – Big Guns and Biggest Guns – strips the potential violence from these iconic shapes.

(I promise. No more VG talk.)

If you think you cannot wear a bright orange tie, think again.

You can wear White Horse Trading Company’s Hunter’s Orange Duck Tie (left, $75) with almost everything in your closet and to almost any of your regular haunts.

Try it with a tweed blazer at a meeting, a plaid shirt at work, a khaki suit at the club or your camouflage in the woods. (I mean you want to look good in case you bag the big one, right?)

The Hunter is made of 10 oz cotton duck. Cut in a modern 2″ width and featuring a square bottom, the Hunter is finished to perfection.

White Horse Trading Company is owned by a 6th-generation professional sewer who believes that the lines between relaxed and refined can (and perhaps, should be) blurred. To achieve this seamless duality, White Horse Trading Company bench-makes all of its neckwear using a variety of durable and rugged materials – duck, denim, linen and wool.

These materials, just like the men who wear them, develop more charm and character with age.

St. Patrick’s Day is Saturday.

For over 1000 years, the people have Ireland have set aside this day to pay tribute to a great Brit, St. Patrick. (Scratch head now.)

What’s that all about, you ask? Here is the quick history of the man himself: St. Patrick was born in Britain around 390 AD. (Family affluent & Christian.) Not a particularly religious child. Kidnapped at 16. Taken to Ireland and enslaved as a sheep-herder. Had a profound religious conversion. Heard voices. Escaped. Returned home. (Soon) more voices. Returned to Ireland. Ordained. Worked to convert the Irish. Beaten, harassed and admonished. (Tough life.) Died largely unknown on March 17, 461. Lore grew. Centuries later named the Patron Saint of Ireland.

(Whewwww.) The origins of the holiday are somewhat complicated. Luckily, its celebration is not. The original Irish celebration of St. Patrick’s Day included a church service and a reprieve from the Lenten restriction on eating meat. It was one day out of the 40 to enjoy some delicious Irish bacon and cabbage and maybe a pint or two. So this Saturday why not set aside your own Lenten disciplines and dance, drink and feast like your Irish? (Even if you are not!)

Below are 5 amazing American companies who make some fabulous products that will make your St. Patrick’s Day unforgettable. (You’ll love them all!)

And lest you think it strange to use American-made products to celebrate an Irish holiday, consider this: Until the 1970s St. Patrick’s Day was a minor religious holiday in Ireland. It was, in fact, not the Irish but their American relatives who brought the holiday to such popularity and prominence. Irish-Americans embraced St. Patrick’s Day as a way to connect with their roots. The result: parades, parties and even a dyed river or two. O! And lots of fun.

Beannachtam na Feile Padraig!

Carnegie Deli - Made in Carlstadt, New Jersey

Party 101 – Serve the right food.

Carnegie Deli’s Corned Beef Brisket (left) is the absolute right food for St. Patrick’s Day (or any other day you want a taste of the best NYC has to offer.)

Manhattan’s world-famous deli pickles, cures and smokes their own at their New Jersey factory. It is this attention to detail and quality that keeps people waiting in line year after year. (The unbelievably generous portions don’t hurt either.)

If you are lucky enough to be in New York on St. Patrick’s Day, queue up early for the best corned beef the City has to offer.

But if (like me) your St. Patrick’s Day celebration will take place outside Manhattan, do not fret. Carnegie Deli now offers the same high quality USDA meats used in their restaurant for delivery to your home.

Their Corned Beef, which has been cooked for over 10 hours to ensure tenderness, is sold in 2 pound packages ($23.75 per package) – enough for 4 generous, Carnegie-sized, 8 oz sandwiches – and comes with a complimentary a 9 oz jar of Carnegie Deli Mustard.

The Corned Beef ships frozen. You simply thaw and heat according to the directions to provided. (Even I can do that!) It is a no-muss, no-fuss way to a delicious St. Patrick’s Day feast!

(Carnegie Deli also offers its renowned Pastrami in the same 2 lb heat & eat packages, just so you know.)

Visit store.carnegiedeli.com or 854 7th Avenue @ 55th Street.

Hot Blondies Bakery – New York, New York

Party 201 – Serve the right food.

And let’s face it there is never a wrong time for a blondie.

Especially, if that blondie was made by two hot blondes like Laura and Lorin.

These golden-haired goddesses are responsible for the buttery, gooey mouthfuls of sin known as Hot Blondies.

In their bakery, Laura and Lorin bring their own blond-ambition to bear on a variety of trans-fat free, hydrogenated oil-free, preservative-free ingredients. The result of which is a menu of the most delectable blondies and brunettes, you have ever seen.

(It is worth noting that Hot Blondies Bakery also makes whoopee pies, cereal treats, cookie cakes and tarts. Laura and Lorin also accept custom orders and offer baking classes.)

And just in time for St. Patrick’s Day, the ladies have concocted the Get Lucky Blondie (above, $25/per 6-pack). The Shamrock-shaped (say that 3 times fast) treat is elfin green and packed full of green M&Ms. (And you know what they say about green M&Ms.)

Can you think of a better way to celebrate?

(I am not sure about this custom. Is it cruel? funny? or just another way to make touching people you do not know very well socially acceptable?)

You will be proud to wear green March 17th (or any day of the year) thanks to Kiel Patrick James.

His Captain Oscar O’Leary belt (left, $88) is made of the highest quality available materials.

Kiel Patrick James (KPJ) is obsessed with style, construction and 100% American-made products. And his obsession is evident in every detail of his Croffix Sailing Belts.

Each belt begins with the best US-made hand-knotted nautical cord KPJ can find. The cord is purchased and shipped to the KPJ factory in Rhode Island where it is braided by hand.

Each belt is reinforced with a custom KJP Hertiage Tartan Plaid backing and is finished with KJP-stamped full grain vegetable-tanned leather ends and a solid brass buckle.

The result is the most handsome and the most durable braided belt on the market.

And, just in case you were wondering, KPJ’s Croffx Sailing Belt is available in other colors – 17 other colors to be exact. Some are solid; others offer amazing combinations of colors.

Circle. Circle. Dot. Dot.

When you think about it, dots, though often tiny, are pretty powerful things.

They help the blind (braille), transmit text (morse code), indicate a full stop (period) or part of a whole (decimal), or (in series) signal that something that is missing or unsaid (ellipsis).

With all the hard work these little bits do, it is nice to know that they also take time out of their busy schedules to have some fun.

The dot brings a smile to whatever it touches.

And few do a better job of capitalizing on this happy graphic than the 7 American manufacturers below.

Give them all a try.

Cinda B. – Made in USA

Ladies, does your makeup bag leave you less than inspired?

Is it simply a way to schlep your pots of rouge and tubes of lipstick from Point A to Point B?

Then it is time for a change. And there is one company that thinks your bag of tricks should be at least as interesting as its contents. (And I wholeheartedly agree.)

Cinda B’s X-Large Cosmetics Bag (above, $39) is designed to hold (airplane-illicit) full-sized bottles of product, hair styling tools and all that other “stuff” you insist on dragging around. Even more exciting is the fact that this bag is available in 14 bold, expressive patterns that range in color from elegant and subtle blacks, grays and ivories to vibrant, pulse-quickening yellows, blues and reds. (Roundabout Red shown.) So no matter what your personality or mood, Cinda B has a pattern to reflect it.

Once you learn that the main brain behind the Company is interior designer Cinda Boomershine, the genius of the line’s patterns and colors become more understandable, though no less special. Cinda uses her considerable knowledge of the elements of art and design to create an inspiring palette that reflects a range of women (young to previously-young) and destinations (work to play).

Of course, Cinda did not go to all the trouble of developing an amazing array of patterns just for one item. The line includes a bag or case for (dare I say) any occasion in a woman’s life. She makes baby bags, travel bags, totes and handbags, tech cases and even golf club and tennis racquet covers.

If you cannot find the bag or case your are looking for, email Cinda. She’s up to the challenge!

Dusen Dusen - Made in USA

Everything starts from a dot. – Wassily Kandisky

If Kandinsky is right (and even if he is not), Dusen Dusen’s Dots Elastic Waist Dress (left, $129) is everything.

It is the right blend of style, comfort and luxury. The 100% silk beauty is easy to wear and hard to ignore.

Its short-sleeves, wearable length and elastic waist make it a go-to choice for weekend errands and activities. Simply pull your hair in a pony-tail and throw on your flip-flops and you look as good as you feel. The sophisticated color and quirky pattern make this dress anything but ordinary.

And when you are ready to head out for the evening or to the office, you can take this dress to the next level with a belt, flats and jewelry.

The dress’ versatility is the result of brand creator Ellen Van Dusen’s fun, confidence-inspiring aesthetic.

J Schatz – Made in USA

Seeing spots?

It is not your eyes. It is instead the magic of ceramic artist Jim Schatz.

Jim’s always beautiful, often functional, work is designed to capture and create wonder. And there is no doubt that this is just what the Cilindro Pendant (left, $275) does.

(Seriously, if loving this light is wrong, I do not want to be right)

Handcrafted of ceramic earthenware, this pendant is the perfect size (11.5″h x 5″w) to shine a light on your work in the kitchen, set the mood in your bedroom or simply dazzle in your foyer. (Each light includes a canopy ceiling kit and takes a 60 watt bulb.)

Jim offers the Cilindro in 7 glossy colors – red hot, sun yellow, light aqua, orange peel, bright white, pink and olive (shown) – and in your choice of pierced (shown) or solid.

So the only hard part is deciding which of these luscious lamps you will make your own.

After a long day of patty-cake, peek-a-boo, crawling, teething, drooling and smearing strained peas into your hair, you need a place of your own to relax and unwind.

Not surprisingly, the band of smarty-pants that run Little Giraffe have created a perfectly polka-dotted oasis.

The Chenille New Dot Pillow (left, $37) is the Company’s latest addition to its coo-worthy baby line.

The 14″x14″ pillow features Little Giraffe’s much-lauded, oh-so-soft chenille in a choice of 4 colors (shown top to bottom – denim, pink, celadon, and blue) surrounded by white satin border dotted in the same feature color.

Since its arrival on the scene in 2000, Little Giraffe has turned the heads of celebrity moms like Katie Holmes, Angelina Jolie, Halle Berry and Jessica Alba. The reason? Something any mom or dad can relate to — their kids love them.

And why wouldn’t they? Little Giraffe’s blankets, pillows and toys come in an array of soft, soothing colors and incredibly soft textures making them the perfect security blanket, nap-time companion or best friend.

Find yourself wishing you were young enough for your own Little Giraffe? You are.

If you were stranded on a desert island with only one pattern, you probably want it to be the stripe. No pattern is as versatile.

Stripes can be:

horizontal, vertical or diagonal

narrow, wide or a combination of the two

subtle or bold in color contrast

formal or whimsical

Stripes can indicate:

a prep

a sailor

an inmate

a barcode

The 7 American manufacturers below give you the opportunity to pay homage to the stripe (without getting shipwrecked). Check them out. You will discover more possibilities (than even you ever imagined) for the much loved stripe.

Fishs Eddy* – Made in USA

You’ll have to think long and hard to come up with any item that is more iconic and more comforting than the heft of a diner coffee cup. (And don’t you have a day job?)

Think about those late night (or technically early morning) visits to your favorite diner. The place envelopes you like a blanket. It is full of familiar smells (bacon, eggs and the like). The lighting is not great. But that doesn’t matter because no one looks good at that time of day anyway. The vinyl booths (a tad greasy) and the formica tables remind you of simpler times (even if you are too young to remember them). And the steaming hot coffee is plentiful.

You wrap you hands around the heavy cup and a sudden warmth fills you – mind, body and spirit. (Something that never happens at Starbucks!) Part of the magic is the lateness of the hour but the rest is that cup.

Thanks to Fishs Eddy, you can recreate these Hopper-esque moments in your home with the Green Band Cup and Saucer (above, $8.95). This 7 3/4 oz. capacity cup is microwave and dishwasher safe. It also stacks easily in your (limited-capacity) cabinetry.

To complete your in-home diner, Fishs Eddy also makes dinner plates, side plates, bowls, platters, and mugs. All of the same commercial quality that has become the Company’s hallmark.

And just in case green is not your color of choice, Fishs Eddy also offers their diner-ware in Cinnabar, Cobalt, Black and Manhattan Blue Plate.

If you are Frank Weeden, you can.

A self-titled stripe aficionado, Frank created the Ana Candle. The 14″ colorful striped tapers (left, $24/pair) first appeared on the scene in 1994. Since that time they have gained a loyal following that delights in the “perfect symmetry, smooth finish and deep richness” of each wide or narrow stripe.

Given the effects of colors like wasabi, mint, bamboo, raspberry, sienna, turquoise, latte, wedgwood, peacock, cyan, chiffon, daffodil, lime, honeydew and blush, you may be tempted to forget about quality. Fortunately for you, Frank isn’t.

Each Ana candle is made with 100% biodegradable premium quality paraffin wax and lead-free cotton wicks. The tapers are engineered to have a 14 hour burn time (approximately) and to be virtually smokeless and drip-free. And talk about attention to detail – the wicks are pre-trimmed at the factory so that each taper is ready to use straight out of the package. (Yeah!)

To further ensure that you get your stripe fix, the Company also makes a lively array of striped pillars for all of those corners of your home (and/or yard) where candlesticks dare not tread. The 3″x3″ cylinders have a burn time of approximately 30 hours and a delicate Evening Primrose scent. (Tapers are all unscented.)

And just in case you should ever stumble upon an occasion where stripes are not appropriate (and I personally cannot imagine what that would be), the Ana Candle is available in a luscious palate of solid tapers ($18/pair) as well.

Freaker USA – Made in Troy, North Carolina

Think you know everything there is to know about koozies?

Then you haven’t been Freaked.

A spirited (and that is perhaps the biggest understatement I have ever made) group of NC creative-types has created a one-size fits all container sweater that will change your life — or at the very least your attitude toward it.

The Handy Randy Freaker (left, $8) is one example of the uber-insulators’ funky and festive designs.

But it is not just the Freaker’s vibrant colors and patterns that make it stand out from the 100s of koozies you have been given at trade shows, sporting events and weddings. The strong and tightly-knit Freaker can do something that no common koozie would ever dare.It can conform to the size and shape of whatever bottle, can or vase you choose to insulate.

Prefer the taste of soda from a bottle? The Freaker fits. Like to drink your malt liquor from a 40 oz can? The Freaker fits. Too cheap to buy a real vase so you try to “dress up” the tacky one from the florist? The Freaker fits. (But honestly, you really should spend a few bucks on a new vase! And save your Freaker for your beverages.)

In short, use of the Freaker is limited only by your imagination. If you need to keep something warm/cool or simply want to outfit it, odds are the Freaker fits. And don’t worry if you stretch your Freaker, you can easily return it to its original proportions by machine washing it.

The Freaker is truly the last koozie you will ever need. (Of course, the patterns are so fabulously zany you will not be able to buy just one!)

Warning: With the purchase of a Freaker you become part of the nation-wide Freaker party hosted by a gloriously outrageous group of nickname-giving, moist-handshake-preventing, fun-facilitators. You’ll never be the same.

NIDO de suenos – Made in Brooklyn, New York

Subtle. Elegant. Beautiful.

These are all words that can and should be used to describe NIDO’s Sailor Ring (left, $100).

Made of raw white porcelain with a white glaze, this ring has a cool, smooth tactile quality that makes it a pleasure to wear. (The ring is available in sizes 6-10 so the perfect fit is easy to achieve.)

Adapting the much beloved nautical stripes into sophisticated jewelry, NIDO has hand-embellished the top of the Sailor Ring with a series of narrow of blue and grey stripes.

At a distance these stripes blend together, appearing almost to be a solid block of color. As a result, the stripes become a secret shared only by the wearer and those who really pay attention. (Does anyone else really matter?)

NIDO works with a variety of materials from paper to wood but has a special affinity for clay – its materials attributes and its sustainability.

Richer Poorer*- Made in USA

Love pattern (particularly stripes) but not sure how to incorporate them into your very buttoned-down wardrobe and lifestyle?

Meet Richer Poorer.

Let’s face it. Traditionally men have not had as many opportunities to express themselves through dress as women. Most men prefer to play it pretty close-to-the-vest when it comes to major wardrobe staples like suits, sport coats, pants and shirts. So that leaves them only ties, pocket squares and socks to play with.

Richer Poorer understands that. They also understand that most men do not want to make huge, bold fashion statements. However, they do want to look modern and with-it, not boring or stodgy.

That is what makes the Company’s line of socks unique. They are more stylish than solid black or brown socks but not too fashion-y. Most of Richer Poorer’s socks utilize both conservative patterns (stripes and dots) and colors (blue, grey, black, and brown) making them the perfect way to punch up your look without 1) looking like you are trying too hard and/or 2) without drawing too much attention to yourself. (Looking for something more bold? They’ve got that too.)

The Stripe (above, $18) is the perfect example of Richer Poorer’s not-to-radical modernization of the American man’s foot. The classic navy and white stripe would be as appropriate with khakis, a polo and loafers as it would with a navy power-suit and cap-toes. (Of course, they would also look great with more daring ensembles.)

The combed cotton socks feature a blend of nylon, spandex and elastic to help it retain its shape and stay up. They fit men’s sizes 6-12.

Visit www.richer-poorer.com.

*Not all Richer Poorer products are made in the US. Please read source information carefully.

Back to our mini series. (Sorry, for the interruption.)

Tartan, gingham, tattersall, and madras. It doesn’t matter what you call it, it is all plaid.

The unevenly spaced lines and crossing right angles have been favorites of Scots for years. But thanks to the great American thinkers and makers below, there are now great ways incorporate these beloved patterns into our US-made arsenal.

Dan and Dave* – Made in USA

All hands on deck.

(Or to be more direct — Get your hands on one of these decks!)

Magic and cardistry visionaries Dan and Dave have created two playing card decks, each featuring a fabulous vintage plaid back. Available in either Arizona Red or California Blue, the Vintage Plaid Playing Cards (left, $5.95) are the perfect way to class up your next poker night or add a little style to a cut-throat Go Fish battle.

Designed by Dan and Dave, these vintage plaid cards are manufactured by the US Playing Card Company on premium stock with a cambric finish, so you can rest assured that they are indeed regulation playing cards.

They are also ideal for the kind of card tricks that have made Dan and Dave famous. If you want to get in on the action, you can purchase Dan and Dave’s how-to downloads and/or DVDs and with a little practice (or in my case, lots and lots of practice) you will be dazzling your friends in no time. (Tricks are available in 3 difficulty levels – easy, moderate & difficult.)

Mad for these plaid cards? (Its only natural.) Thanks to Dan and Dave their Vintage Plaid Playing cards are also available in an uncut sheet (22″ x 26.5″) – straight off the factory press. Feel free to paper your walls with them or (for the slightly less daring) frame them for your game room wall.

Filson* – Made in USA

Bag-O-Plaid.

Whether you are headed out hunting in the Scottish lowlands, to the Highland Games for the day, or simply to the library to work on your report about Charles Rennie Mackintosh, this is the bag for you.

Filson, a company known for its rugged good looks and uncompromising durability, has managed to marry the charm of plaid with the practicality of an all-purpose field/messenger bag.

With its padded bridle leather shoulder strap, the Medium Wool Field Bag (above, $184.99 current sale price) is designed to be worn across the body and sit comfortably on your hip. It features a quick-access, full-width open rear pocket and 2 open side pockets. For extra strength, the sides and bottom of the bag are completely lined with Filson’s industrial weight 100% cotton Rugged Twill. The bag also offers 2 bellows pockets and a pocket-free roomy interior. The bags details and dimensions (14″w x 11″h x 5″ d) make it ideal for use as a field bag, book bag, briefcase or even an overnighter.

Blue not bring out your eyes? The Medium Wool Field Bag is also available in burgundy and green plaid (also on current sale), as well as gray plaid, red plaid and solid black (available at regular price of $250). Filson also offers the following wool plaid coordinates: Small Wool Field Bag, Wool Tote Bag, Small Wool Duffle Bag and Wool Duffle Bag with Wool Side Panels (each available in a selection of sale and regularly priced colors).

FORAGE - Made in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

What comes to mind when you hear the words “plaid tie?”

(If you answered a thai noodle dish featuring peanuts, email me immediately. We would obviously get along famously!)

If you think it sounds like something your lovable, albeit less-than-stylish grandfather would wear, you are wrong. (Sorry, there was no nicer way to say that.) Especially, if the plaid tie in question is from the uber-hip FORAGE.

You see the FORAGE dynamic duo, Shauna and Stephen, don’t just make plaid ties. They make beautifully hand-crafted neckwear for lads and lassies out of vintage deadstock fabrics, fabric remnants and other extra-special finds.

Their ties – plaid and otherwise – are each handmade in small (sometimes even tiny) editions as dictated by the amount of fabric available. Consequently, when you shop at FORAGE, you can rest assured that you will not run into lots of people wearing the same tie. A feature that may very well be priceless, but one that actually costs a lot less than many more mainstream/mass-produced ties. I

In fact, the Spring Plaid Necktie (above) is made in an edition of only 4 (told you – tiny) and yet costs an accessible $78. (This tie is 2″ wide at its widest point, 58″ long and is 100% cotton.)

Give plaid (or at least FORAGE) a chance.

Mrs. Jermyn – Made in Brooklyn, New York

What do you do when you favorite button-down becomes an embarrassment to those who know and love you?

You really only have two options: 1) keep wearing it – dump your friends, fire your family and look for a new group of people who will accept you and your shirt despite its missing buttons, tiny tears, and obvious shrinkage (seriously, good luck with that!) OR 2) immortalize your beloved shirt by having Mrs. Jermyn make a tedi out it. (Pick #2!)

Shirt-repurposer Annika Jermyn’s obsession with sewing and design began in childhood. A native of Finland, her mother and grandmother had her sewing and crocheting from the time she was old enough to hold a needle. Annika went on to study design in Ireland before moving to New York and working as a fashion designer for John Rocha for several years.

Now she is a public servant. She saves well-loved shirts from the rag pile. Annika breathes new life into these softer-than-pjs button-downs. Each shirt becomes a cute, cozy, cuddly “tedi” bear with a name and personality of its own, like Mr. Robert (above, $80).

Annika will either make a tedi out of your own beloved button-down or you can choose from one of the amazing tedis she has created from her own (or Mr. Jermyn’s) stash of repurposed menswear. Annika’s tedis are available in a wide variety of colors and patterns, so the only problem you will have is trying to decide which one to love.

SUPERMODULE - Made in San Francisco, California

This plaid is totally noteworthy.

Launched in 2009, SUPERMODULE is a line of greeting cards and prints designed by graphic-guru David Riofrio.

Exploring his passion for traditional letterpress techniques and classic textile patterns – tartan/plaid, houndstooth and the like – David has created the Stay Warm series which is indeed traditional and classic, but also manages to be modern and fresh at the same time.

Most of David’s cards are printed on 100% cotton paper that is made with waste fiber from the garment industry. The use of this material ties his series ever more closely to its haberdashery inspirations and ensures that the cards are as much a tactile delight, as they are a visual one. (Think lovely soft paper with deep letterpress indentations!)

Ward (above, $4.95) is one of 3 patterns in the series that is rendered in the anything-but-typical colors of electric lime and soft gray. (Ward’s companion pieces are Ed and Al. All three are sold individually or in a boxed set of 6 (2 of each design) for $24.)

It seems only appropriate to offer an alternative to all the ooey-gooey romance of the lovers post.

After all none of us is one-dimensional. Even hopeless romantics have an edgier side. (I hope.)

However, you do not need a dark (or even dusky) side to appreciate the great American-made products below. Each is amazing enough to make the Dalai Lama want to take up arms. (Please follow his example and don’t!)

But do enjoy the terrific and tough goodies below.

Digby & Iona – Made in Brooklyn, New York

“Gonna rifle on, sing my song.”

No? Not the way the song goes? (Sorry, I have always had trouble deciphering lyrics.)

Well, it would have been if Robert Plant had seen Digby & Iona’s Crossed Rifle Necklace (left, $150). (And maybe, just maybe, then the poor guy would have found some success as a song writer and musician.)

While it may be too late for RP to get it right, it is definitely not for you. Take a look at this necklace and you will find yourself – perhaps for the first time, perhaps again – considering the artistry of something as utilitarian (not to mention potentially lethal) as a rifle.

The man responsible for that (not so small feat) is Parson’s trained artist/designer/jeweler Aaron Ruff. It is Aaron’s own incredible craftsmanship and skill that provide the opportunity for such an epiphany.

His work is inspired by everything from nature and tools to history and literature. His jewelry is intricate, but not fussy; detailed, but not over-wrought; complex, but not complicated; beautiful, but not girly; and sentimental, but not cloying. To achieve this balance, Ruff often calls upon his childhood fantasies to inform his designs. (Maybe that is how he gets us to see things again or for the first time!)

Guns never going to be your thing? Don’t worry. Aaron has lots of over amazing designs to choose from.

Lucky for you, most of his work is available in sterling silver and, as a result, is very accessible. (Thanks, Aaron!) Some pieces like the Crossed Rifle Necklace ($130 in sterling silver) are also available in vermeil or gunmetal finishes at a slightly higher price-point. And a few of his bracelets, cufflinks, earrings, necklaces and rings are available in other metals and/or are embellished with precious/semi-precious stones.

Mollycoddle Soap – Made in Grand Junction, Colorado

This soap is da bomb.

(Technically, I guess it is da grenade, but that doesn’t sound as hip and is unlikely to catch on.)

Mollycoddle’s Pink Hand Grenade (left, $5) is definitely the biggest pop of color your bathroom has ever seen.

Made of vegan glycerine, this 4.2 ounce soap is the perfect way to combat the dirt and germs of daily life.

Each soap is made with care by Mollycoddle’s own munitions expert (and mom), Kelly McDowell-DeVries. She hand colors and individually adds scents to each soap she creates making it possible for her easily adapt to customer requests. Scent (or unscent) and color preferences are no problem – just ask.

And it seems Kelly’s whimsy knows no bounds. In addition to grenades, Kelly makes soap in the shape of rice crispy treats, pickles, cameos, mustaches and more.

(Come clean. Did you ever think lathering up could be this fun?)

Renee Andriole Designs – Made in Los Angeles, California

Talk about a killer ring. This is it.

(Both literally and figuratively.)

From her Los Angles studio, ultra-cool and soon to be Oscar-worthy jeweler, Renee Andriole fashions wearable wonders that are influenced by her interest in and passion for art, music and fashion; the past and future; as well as, the body that her jewelry will ultimately adorn.

The Sickle Ring (left, $175) is one of the latest examples of her daring genius.

Made of 3 layers of sickle shape sterling silver fastened with brass bolts, the elegant curves and sharp points of this ring are sure to draw attention (and perhaps blood, if used in self-defense).

Renee’s work pushes the boundaries of what femininity, adornment and, in some cases even, jewelry are. Leaving you (and me) the better for it.

Sugarpost – Made in Salt Lake City, Utah

Semper Fidelis.* Semper Tardus.

(Always faithful. Always slow.)

Sugarpost’s MP Turtle (left, $100) may be the last one to arrive at the front line, but he is certainly ready to fight when he gets there.

This recycled reptile recruit comes from the creative mind of Fred Conlon.

It was inspired by the combination of a serendipitous trip to the surplus store and one of his Grandpa Willy’s life lessons: “War happens so suddenly. Peace moves slowly.”

At the surplus store, Fred noticed a pile of army helmets and it occurred to him that these helmets looked like turtle shells. It wasn’t long before he had hit upon a creature that would bring his grandfather’s words to life.

Each of these slow-moving peace-keeping sculptures is made by the artist. And today Fred’s friends are available in 5 versions – plain helmet, red cross, MP, wine caddy and turtle-dove. All are designed to live indoors or out and get better with age.

(Your feet that is.)

Relax on your sofa or unwind in your favorite chair with Utilitarian Franchise’s Revolver Gun Diagram Pillow (left, $35).

Just don’t expect to learn anything about the construction of revolver. This amazingly detailed diagram has lots of labels but no key.

This pillow may not be loaded (with bullets or information) or able to thwart a burglar, but it will help you fight crime. Simply toss it (or any of Utilitarian Franchise’s pillows) on your furniture and banish the blahs. Don’t laugh. Boring furniture is a real crime and it impacts 1 in 3 American households. (Yes, I completely made up that statistic. Why should politicians have all the fun?)

Thankfully, there is help. Utilitarian Franchise offers a staggering variety of original and vintage silkscreened images (including moths, birds, and boxing bucks to name just a few), so you are sure to have no trouble finding one (two, three or four) that will make both you and your sofa smile.

All of Utilitarian Franchise’s pillows are made from 100% cotton canvas. Each is available in 1 of 12 colors and is silkscreened with eco-friendly ink and finished with an invisible zipper. A polyfill pillow insert is provided with each order, but you can up-grade to a down insert for an additional charge.
